My year in Coffee Jan. 4 - Papua New Guinea Kogure
Today's Coffee is one I roasted myself. It's Papua New Guinea Kogure. that I got from Burman Coffee Traders
It was a very smooth, nice cup of coffee. Mellow. I did probably roast it darker than what I've read is recommended, but it worked well for me. I did something unusual for this one. I have several popcorn poppers I use. I identify each with a letter. Machine C has a hard time getting to second crack. Machine D is one of those with the mesh at the bottom - the kind everyone says not to use. It' gets way to hot and gets to second crack before the coffee is developed. I did this batch in C until just after 1st crack and then moved to D. I didn't take it quite to 2nd crack, but it got much darker. I like the result.
Like I said, the taste was mellow and kind of like rich chocolate. It made for a great breakfast coffee black. The 2nd cup (pictured in my mug) was one I added cream too. The coffee taste was too diluted even with only a tablespoon for 10oz and I don't think I'll be adding milk to future cups of this one.
I'm making a couple of puzzles from pictures of this batch. Look for future posts.

My Year in Coffee - Jan 3 Oddly Correct Geradino Tecano
This morning I have a nice flower cup filled with a Colombian coffee from Oddly Correct. The cup has no markings so I have no idea where it's from. I like the ruffled look to the edge handle. Those unusual details are in contrast to the way the flowers are lined up in rows.
This is the coffee. It was bright. Kind of like how Sprite is bright and clean. I guess that was the lime listed under taste characteristics. Not a lot of lingering after taste. I didn't taste anything like honey, apple juice & raisin, but I'm still learning to differentiate tastes and characteristics. Even though I didn't get a lot of sweet up front when it was black - I added a tablespoon of flavored creamer because I was in the mood and it was WAY WAY too much even in 12 oz. Made it over sweet. So even though I didn't get fruit sweetness, it was sweet.
This is the bag art. The owner of Oddly Correct makes wood cuts and they are printed onto the bags, by hand I think. Not in a super automated fashion for sure. It's a labor of love for them, from selecting the bean to bagging it for the customer.
The 4 stages of coffee for today.

my year in coffee Jan 2
For my afternoon cup I used some of my home roasted brands.
I went darker with this one. Just at second crack on the poppery. No taste of burn or carbon. A little bitter up front, but not overly so. Full feeling. I didn't notice a minty smell but I'm congested today so no aromas really summer to me on anything. Overall the cup was nice and clear with a sweeter aftertaste which was nice. I used the pour over method to brew. About 30 grams of coffee and 600 grams of water. Have a pot over with a metal filter but I use a chemex filter instead. I just like it better.
My Year in Coffee
One of my resolutions this year is to log the coffees I try and the ones I roast. For a couple of months I've been showing a new cup a day and I will keep that up. Additionally I will make notes on the coffee drink and the beans I roast. Much easier to remember what I like if I write it down.
January 1 started with a mocha at midnight.
The cup was a gift from my oldest daughter. On the other side is a photo of my girls & I hugging.
I used Major Dickason's blend from Peet's Coffee & Tea. Maybe at midnightI should have used a decaf, but this stuff does make a nice shot. Unpasturized whole milk from my local farmer. -- I buy my milk from the back of a van in a parking lot. Makes me feel dagerous! :-) -- I made a cinnamon espresso sauce which doesn't show up well but it's there on top.
I like Major Dickason's. It's consistent and tasty. They also tell you when it was roasted on the side of the bag. Something that is important to me.
Today is Jan 2 and my coffee for today is from Oddly Correct here in Kansas City.
It's from Costa Rica and gettng close to 2 weeks old so it's time to use it up. It's Finca Chayote that was Honey Process from Villa Sarchi.
I don't know that I tasted the red grapes & cranberries as suggested but I do taste roasted nut and something slightly sweet.
I made it with a pour over. Nice head of crema and a good aroma.
The cup is a vintage mug that perfectly matches my non vintage stoneware set.
It's a smaller cup - by my standards anyway- 8 oz. I had two cups.
This mug is one I have duplicates of. I've decided to sell off some of the duplicates on etsy. I have a lot of vintage mugs and not a lot of storage space. I'm also dedicating this year to minimizing the amount of stuff I have, so keeping duplicates is not in line with that resolution.
